Kingston, Jamaica – A 28-year-old woman who posed as a police officer and scammed a man out of $200,000 was remanded in custody after a hearing at Kingston St. Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday. The accused, Britney Harris, will spend the next few months in prison.
Britney Harris is also charged in a similar case from September 2023, where she reportedly posed as the owner of a 2016 Mercedes-Benz and collected $2.42 million from a male plaintiff.
In the current case, presided over by Senior Magisterial District Judge Sancha Burrell, Harris allegedly contacted the plaintiff, posing as a police officer, and claimed she could assist him in retrieving a 2014 Toyota Fielder. The plaintiff was asked to deposit $200,000 into Harris’ bank account to complete the job, which he did.
A visibly annoyed Judge Burrell, who had already heard several similar cases that morning, expressed frustration over the frequency of such scams and urged the police to raise awareness about the issue.
“I hear the same thing every day, and this is absurd,” Judge Burrell stated. “Why do people continue to part with their money so easily?”
Harris’ next court date is set for September 12.
