Mercedes-Benz, through local dealer Silver Star Motors, has made its first foray into the electric vehicle (EV) sector with the EQE sports utility vehicle (SUV).
The EV SUV was unveiled on Wednesday, May 1st at the showroom on South Camp Road in Kingston.
Silver Star Motors brand manager Amanda Issa welcomed the introduction of the EQE into the growing automotive all-electric sector.
“Thanks to our many years of experience in the field of alternative drive systems, Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles offer the usual high quality and reliability combined with innovative technology and hallmark Mercedes-Benz safety,” she told media at the launch event.
The EQE is positioned as a fully electric alternative to the petrol-engined GLE SUV. Its exterior features the face of the Mercedes EQ series of cars, known as the Black Panel. As an EV does not need a front grille, the EQE has a single black panel with the distinctive pattern using Mercedes-Benz stars. At the rear, the rear lamps link with the centre rear light strip to form a 3D helix, giving the EQE further unique style. Both of these design elements give the EQE an unmistakable light signature at the front and rear.
“Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles are fantastic. Look at the EQE SUV,” Issa said.
In 350 4MATIC trim, the EQE delivers 292 horsepower to all four wheels via a lithium-ion battery with 89 kWh of usable capacity, giving it a driving range of up to 334 miles. It can be charged at 22 kW on AC power, or up to 170 kW with DC fast charging.
Issa said there are many benefits to owning an EV, including being greener with no emissions, easier to drive with instant torque, and lower maintenance costs with fewer wearing parts.
It’s on par with the GLE, with plenty of interior space and a focus on driver comfort and luxury.
“These vehicles will come equipped with advanced features such as 3D driver displays, adaptive suspension and the MBUX infotainment system,” she further explained.
Following the EQE will be the EQS, an all-electric version of the S-Class sedan.
“We are excited for our customers to experience this exciting vehicle model,” said Issa.
