Food Awards judge Janelle Pantry-Coke checks out Sora Japanese.
Jamaica is a melting pot of cultures and its vibrant restaurant scene truly reflects the many different ethnicities that call the island home. Kingston is a truly cosmopolitan city that reflects its rich culture and the Progressive Shopping Centre at 26 Barbican Road offers the best of it. International fusion, Chinese, Lebanese and Japanese cuisine awaits you at this conveniently located location.
Upon entering Sora Japanese, we were immediately struck by the modern and attractive décor. The walls are adorned with striking murals depicting Japanese geishas, and the soft lighting creates a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. Seating is comfortable, with a mix of booths and tables, as well as outdoor seating with a bar that offers views of both the bustling city and the Blue Mountains.
Our meal started with the Dragon Roll – crispy shrimp inside and topped with avocado, spicy mayonnaise and eel sauce. For the main course I had the Yaki Udon – a mix of vegetables, shrimp and pork that did not disappoint – “this is the main thing that comes to the fore” according to my waiter. My lunch partner chose the Teriyaki Chicken Bento which came with miso soup, a mini salad and Japanese rice.
Sora offers great value for money with generous portions and high quality ingredients. The highlight of our lunch was the piping hot Yaki Udon, large enough for two to share. The service at Sora was exceptional. The waiter was friendly and attentive without being intrusive, had a good knowledge of the menu and made great recommendations. Our order was taken promptly and the food was brought out on time.
If you’re looking to enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine in a warm and cozy atmosphere, we highly recommend Sora. Delicious food, attentive service and a charming ambience make this restaurant the perfect place for a casual lunch or a Friday stroll around town.
