Kingston, Jamaica — A Legacy of Learning
Located in the vibrant community of Rollington Town on Dunoon Road, Kingston, Vaz Preparatory School proudly celebrates its 73rd year of educational service this year. From its humble beginnings with just three students, all relatives of founder Hazel Louise Vaz, the school has grown into a cornerstone of academia within Jamaican society.
From Humble Beginnings to a Beacon of Excellence
Established 73 years ago at the same location it occupies today, Vaz Preparatory has seen its student population flourish over the decades, becoming a nurturing ground for children from all walks of society. The school’s unwavering commitment to academic and extracurricular excellence has earned it a distinguished reputation.
Throughout its impressive history, the institution has been guided by only three principals. Following its founder Hazel Louise Vaz, her niece Beverly Wett took the baton, and today the leadership is held by Karlene Bisnott-Hemmings, who continues to uphold the school’s rich legacy.
A Culture of Achievement
Vaz Preparatory has become synonymous with excellence across multiple arenas. The school has garnered accolades in various fields including spelling bee competitions, sports, Jamaica Cultural Development Commission events, and the Junior School Challenge Quiz, reinforcing its status as a top-tier educational institution.
As the students and faculty commemorated this milestone, the celebration was a collective acknowledgment of the school’s journey and achievements. “We are proud of our rich legacy and continue to build on it to ensure that Mrs. Vaz’s dream is fulfilled. We take great pride in working honestly in all we do as promoted by the school’s motto — Honest Labour Bears a Lovely Face,” said Principal Bisnott-Hemmings during the anniversary events.
A Moment to Reflect
The anniversary ceremony was rich in symbolism and tradition, showcasing the students’ and faculty’s pride in their school’s heritage. With Ramon Thompson capturing the moments, the event served as both a celebration of past accomplishments and a look toward a promising future.
The images from the day reflect the joyous atmosphere of the school community, from students participating in various activities to the entire school standing united in commemoration. Each photograph tells a story of dedication, unity, and the ongoing pursuit of educational excellence.
Looking Ahead
As Vaz Preparatory School steps into its 74th year, it does so with a strong foundation built on integrity, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. With the leadership of Principal Karlene Bisnott-Hemmings and the continued support of its staff, students, and community, the school is well-poised to continue its legacy of nurturing young minds and contributing positively to society.
