Jamaica to Host Landmark 31st National Science and Technology Conference Focusing on Nuclear Innovations
The Scientific Research Council (SRC) of Jamaica is set to host the 31st National Science and Technology Conference from October 29 to November 1, 2024, at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston. This year, the conference carries the theme “Harmony in Innovation: Unleashing the Power of Nuclear Applications for Sustainable Development.” It aims to gather experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders worldwide to explore the transformative potential of nuclear science and technology for sustainable progress.
The event is particularly significant following Jamaica’s recent Memorandum of Understanding with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Limited. Prime Minister Andrew Holness highlighted this partnership as a testament to Jamaica’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio through new, clean, and sustainable technologies. Beyond energy, Science and Technology Minister Daryl Vaz emphasized the exploration of nuclear technology for waste management and the use of radioisotopes in cancer treatment.
Dr. Charah Watson, Executive Director of the SRC, underscored the conference’s timely focus, noting that nuclear technology could play a transformative role in energy, agriculture, and healthcare in Jamaica, a small island facing unique developmental challenges. "This conference seeks to provide a platform for these discussions, ensuring that Jamaica is well-positioned to consider and benefit from scientific advancements in nuclear technology," said Dr. Watson.
The four-day conference promises a series of insightful sessions and collaborations to harness nuclear technology for sustainable development. Highlights include:
- Day 1, October 29: Nuclear Energy – Governance, Safety, and Small Modular Reactors (SMR)
- Day 2, October 30: Nuclear Applications in the Medical Field
- Day 3, October 31: Nuclear Applications in Agriculture, Mutation Breeding, and SIT for Vector Control
- Day 4, November 1: Non-Destructive Testing and Expanding Nuclear Applications in Health and Industry
The conference will also engage youth through special sessions like the Innovation Summit and the STEM Olympiad Debate competition, promoting creativity and fostering a culture of scientific excellence in Jamaica. Additionally, doctors attending the conference can earn eight hours of Continuing Medical Education credits, including sessions on ethics and mental health.
As the global conversation around nuclear technology advances, Jamaica positions itself at the forefront of this wave, ready to explore how nuclear applications can support its sustainable development goals. This landmark conference is set to be a critical stepping stone for the country and an influential platform for global nuclear innovation.
