ST MARY, Jamaica — A fun-filled family outing at a river near Highgate in St Mary turned into a heartbreaking day of tragedy as a teenager lost her life.
Leon Reid, a 16-year-old student of Guy’s Hill High School, drowned during her family’s trip to Chovey’s river on Wednesday, August 7. What was initially planned as a day to escape the scorching summer heat ended in sorrow and loss.
According to police reports, Reid encountered difficulties while in the water. Despite immediate efforts by family members to rescue her, she remained unresponsive. They rushed her to the Annotto Bay hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Heart-rendingly, the trauma of the incident proved too much for Reid’s mother, who had to be hospitalized after learning of her daughter’s death.
The Annotto Bay police have launched an investigation into the tragic occurrence.
