The Jamaica Fire Brigade is once again engulfed in grief following the untimely death of one of its own. Shahine Nelson, a dedicated firefighter employed in Kingston and St Andrew, lost her life in a tragic car accident on Friday night.
The incident occurred around 10:00 PM in the Angels area of St Catherine. Nelson was on her way home after completing her shift when her Honda Fit collided with a tractor trailer. The sheer impact of the collision left her vehicle crushed under the massive weight of the larger unit, offering her little chance of survival.
Despite the rapid response of her fellow firefighters, Nelson succumbed to her severe injuries on the scene. This devastating news comes as a severe blow to the Fire Brigade, already reeling from previous losses.
Shahine Nelson was the sister of Lorenzo Douse, a firefighter who met an untimely death in November 2022. Douse was involved in a bizarre accident in St Ann where a speeding vehicle pinned him to the back of a fire unit. At that time, Nelson was training to follow in her brother’s heroic footsteps.
Her tragic death follows closely on the heels of another recent loss within the brigade. Just weeks ago, Shamare Myrie, another firefighter employed in Kingston, was fatally stabbed during an altercation in Michigan, USA.
The Fire Brigade community mourns the loss of these brave individuals who dedicated their lives to serving and protecting others. In the wake of these tragic events, the collective spirit of the brigade is tested, highlighting the risks and emotional burdens borne by these everyday heroes.
