As the ten innovators count down until Thursday, June 27, 2024, anticipation is building to see who will win the coveted Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards 2024 Best (New) Local Product award. A group of small, medium and large businesses exhibited at the Food Awards tasting, which took place at the AC Hotel Kingston on Tuesday, May 30, and all agreed that the wealth of knowledge and feedback from the creator of the Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards, Novia McDonald-White, Derimon Trading Co. Ltd. Founder and CEO, Derrick Cotterell (returning for a third consecutive year), and the ten Food Awards judges, was the real prize.
The 12 judges had their taste buds satiated and thrilled with delicious dishes and sweet treats paired with the innovative foods on offer.
“Usually we get a huge amount of sauce sent to us, which is totally fine because Jamaica is ‘the land of sauces’, so we don’t want to discourage the sauce makers,” Cotterell said while welcoming the unique creations from the 10 participants.
This year’s lineup included coffee bread fruit punch, pepper jelly and coffee tea bags from Camgar Farms, coconut oil from Sally’s Gourmet Kitchen, the latest rum cream from Smith’s, ginger beet ketchup and turmeric juice from Lincoln’s, cassava pancake mix from Nella’s, a selection of jellies and sauces from Chef Mark Cole, a bold iteration of Max from Supligen, yellow yum vodka from Wait A Bit and vegan cheese from WellGood.
“We’ve got a wide range of companies taking part this evening, from larger companies like Seprod to people in Clarendon who have a bit of space and have decided to make a product. Overall, the products were very good and I can speak for all the judges and say there were some fantastic presentations,” Mr Cotterell said.
Thursday Food presents five of the ten innovations in part one.
