Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards guest judge Angelique Beaubrun shares her experience at Mystic Thai Sunday Brunch
As you enter Mystic Thai Kingston, you’ll be struck with a traditional brass gong. Why? Because it sets the tone for a bold explosion of flavours that will linger in your palate’s memory long after you’ve finished this Sunday brunch. The exotic Thai décor and fun Bossa Nova music vibes are perfectly matched with the sexy Summer Breeze Gin & Juice served in a turquoise sugar-rimmed cocktail glass. No drinkers? Ask for a non-alcoholic Fresh Lime and Ginger Mocktail!
The diverse taste offerings, flavour combinations and meticulous attention to detail in service were sprinkled with Thai love or “rak” (Thai translation). We enjoyed our brunch on a simple yet elegant table setting with each dish served on specially assigned crockery with a particular shape and colour variation.
We enjoyed four appetizers, starting with a teapot of coconut-curried sea bass noodle soup. The soup was to die for. The Thai mango salad marinated with sweet coriander was a party of delights in the mouth. The crispy citrus shrimp and calamari were tender and delicious, and quickly devoured (in a good way). The honey-glazed pork belly was juicy and the perfect balance of sweet and salty.
This delicious start made me realize that I was going to embrace all four main options because I don’t care about my waistline and life is too short. My two favorites were the sweet and crunchy cardamom-flavored Thai Tea French Toast with fresh coconut cream that was heavenly in every bite. Look no further for the best Basil Pesto Eggs Benedict with perfectly poached eggs on soft, freshly baked sourdough lemongrass focaccia bread. If you’re craving spice, the Red Curry Chicken with tangy cooling cucumber kimchi on a flaky croissant is a great choice. And the Soy Glazed Salmon with sautéed mushrooms, crispy asparagus and mini potato clouds will please any fish lover.
Desserts gently soothed my sweet tooth. The mango crème brûlée delivered rich mango custard flavor in every bite. A healthy mix of fresh dragon fruit, kiwi slices, strawberries and low-carb chia seed pudding reminded me that eating raw food can leave me smiling with sugar-free satisfaction.
Your tummy will be filled with “thank you” or “kop khun” (Thai translation) for this indulgent and extravagant Thai brunch adventure!
