KINGSTON, Jamaica – Former England manager Steve McClaren has been announced as the new manager of Jamaica’s senior men’s national football team, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) revealed on Wednesday.
McClaren, known for his previous role as assistant coach at Manchester United and his stint as England’s head coach from 2006 to 2007, has signed a two-year contract with the JFF. His appointment is aimed at guiding the Reggae Boyz toward a successful campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He replaces Heimir Hallgrimsson, who stepped down following a disappointing Copa America performance last month.
JFF Chairman Michael Ricketts expressed his enthusiasm about the new appointment. “I am really pleased to announce the appointment of McClaren as head coach of the Reggae Boyz. I am confident that we have made the right decision and I look forward to him leading our country towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Ricketts stated.
McClaren, who has also been linked with roles such as a potential successor to the Nigeria national team manager, expressed his excitement about the new role. “At this stage in my career, the role is ideal for me, so I accepted without hesitation. During my second stint with Manchester United, I worked as a technical advisor for FIFA’s Global Eco-Analysis project, where I saw firsthand Jamaica’s potential,” McClaren said.
He added, “Since then, that potential has grown significantly, and there is every reason to believe that with continued hard work and development, a bright future awaits.”
The Reggae Boyz and their fans will be looking forward to the impact McClaren will have as they prepare for the upcoming international competitions.
