Startek Jamaica Champions Community Engagement with Active Participation in Prostate Cancer Awareness and Environmental Sustainability
In a commendable demonstration of community spirit and corporate social responsibility, employees from Startek Jamaica showed their support for prostate cancer awareness by participating in the Blue Run 5K Run/Walk in September, despite challenging rainy weather. Located at Half Way Tree, Startek Jamaica, a business process outsourcing company, has harnessed its Community Matters programme to foster employee involvement in various community activities throughout the year.
This year, approximately 25% of Startek Jamaica’s staff took part in diverse community projects, emphasizing the company’s commitment to socially responsible initiatives. "Employees spend hundreds of hours volunteering in the community, participating in fundraising events, and donating to great causes," stated a company release. Although the popular Relay for Life event was unavailable this year, participants welcomed the Blue Run as a fitting alternative, with the well-established Pink Run 5K Run/Walk also lined up soon.
Environmental responsibility is another core pillar of Startek Jamaica’s community engagement. Teaming up with the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) in June, the company adopted Lyssons Beach in St. Thomas for monthly cleanup activities. This partnership took on particular significance in September, as employees participated in the International Coastal Cleanup Day, focusing their efforts on debris removal along the adopted coastline.
Furthermore, in response to a call during the pandemic, Startek Jamaica embarked on lifesaving initiatives by supporting the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) with an on-site blood drive. The annual blood donation drive in September saw the collection of 21 units, effectively impacting over 50 lives. Over the years, Startek has donated more than 80 units of blood, benefiting upwards of 200 individuals.
Beyond these efforts, Startek Jamaica’s Community Matters initiatives have included food, hygiene, and clothing drives, alongside financial contributions to major local organizations like the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), and Mustard Seed Communities, among others.
Although Startek Inc operates in 38 global locations, Jamaica represents its smallest site. However, the indomitable Jamaican spirit underscores that size doesn’t diminish impact, enabling Startek Jamaica to continue its robust community investment initiatives. Emphasizing its commitment, the company encourages its associates to actively partake in communal endeavors through the Community Matters programme, thereby fostering resilience and strength within the community.
