St Mary Honours Local Heroes and Centenarians on Heroes’ Day
St Mary, Jamaica — As Jamaica prepares to commemorate Heroes’ Day on Monday, October 20, 2024, the parish of St Mary is set to honor 24 individuals for their exceptional contributions to the community. This year’s celebration shines a spotlight on diverse achievements and bravery, with honorees spanning from centenarians to everyday heroes who have made a significant impact in their local areas.
Among those receiving recognition are three centenarians who have witnessed decades of history and contributed to their community’s legacy. Catherine Clarke, at 104 years old, alongside Beryl Mcintosh Dias and Wilhelm Mae Baxter, both 100 years old, exemplify a lifetime of wisdom and experience.
In a display of courage and quick thinking, 35-year-old Castleton resident Tamara Ivy will be acknowledged for her heroic action on September 29. Ivy’s courageous intervention saved a three-year-old boy from drowning in the Castleton River. Recalling the event, Ivy shared, "I saw the children near the river and had a feeling I should warn them, but decided to observe from a distance. When I saw the child being swept away, I knew I had to act."
Her selfless bravery, driven by instinct rather than foresight of recognition, has earned her a heartfelt acknowledgment from the community, a gesture she humbly appreciates.
Also on the list of honorees is Cecil Gordon, recognized for his substantial contributions to community service. Gordon expressed his surprise at being chosen but looks forward to cherishing the award, which signifies years of dedication to his community.
Superintendent of Police Bobbette Morgan Simpson, who is concluding her tenure as the Commanding Officer for the St Mary Division, will receive the Mayor’s special award for her service. Additional accolades will be presented to individuals affiliated with the St Mary Infirmary and the Jamaica Red Cross, underscoring their valuable roles in local health and welfare initiatives.
The ceremony promises to be a heartfelt celebration of service, bravery, and longevity, highlighting those who embody the spirit of Jamaica’s Heroes’ Day through their daily endeavors and lifetime achievements.
