WASHINGTON, United States (AFP) — In a series of significant developments following the assassination attempt on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, multiple Secret Service agents have been placed on leave. These actions come as part of an ongoing investigation into the security lapse that nearly resulted in Trump’s death.
The agents involved were part of the Pittsburgh field office, responsible for coordinating security during Trump’s July 13 campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania. Various media outlets, including RealClearPolitics and major US TV networks, have reported on the disciplinary measures.
Although the US Secret Service has refrained from commenting extensively, a spokesperson emphasized their commitment to a thorough investigation. “The US Secret Service’s mission assurance review is progressing, and we are examining the processes, procedures, and factors that led to this operational failure,” Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the agency, stated.
Guglielmi further stressed the agency’s adherence to high professional standards, noting that any confirmed violations of policy would be examined by the Office of Professional Responsibility for potential disciplinary action.
The situation has also led to significant leadership changes. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned last month, admitting the agency’s failure to thwart the assassination attempt by a 20-year-old gunman. The attack resulted in Trump sustaining a wound to the ear, and tragically, a 50-year-old Pennsylvania firefighter lost his life. Additionally, two rally attendees were seriously injured before a Secret Service sniper neutralized the gunman.
During a recent joint Senate committee appearance, Acting Secret Service Chief Ronald Rowe assured that the agency would take disciplinary action against any agents found to have violated policies. Rowe underscored the agency’s dedication to preventing similar incidents in the future.
Despite the traumatic experience, Trump, 78, continues his campaign efforts. He recently made his first public appearance since the shooting, addressing supporters at an outdoor rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, from behind bulletproof glass.
As the investigation proceeds, the Secret Service remains under intense scrutiny, facing calls for greater accountability and improved security protocols to protect high-profile political figures.
