KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader and Prime Minister Andrew Holness has directed party representatives to enhance their efforts in addressing the challenges faced by Jamaicans, particularly those impacted by Hurricane Beryl.
During a recent meeting of the JLP’s central executive, Holness emphasized the need for accelerated restoration efforts and improved support for public institutions. “We have ramped up assistance to those affected by Hurricane Beryl, but as representatives, you must also support and ensure accountability within your institutions during this recovery period,” Holness advised MPs and councillors.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of avoiding the politicization of reconstruction efforts and encouraged reporting any attempts to divert focus from the relief and recovery process. He highlighted the numerous global challenges Jamaica has faced over the past five years, including pandemics, weather events, supply chain disruptions, and inflation.
Holness acknowledged the unique difficulties his administration has managed without worsening the national debt or increasing taxes. He praised the government’s handling of these crises and called for more robust and effective policies to address future challenges.
Concerns were also raised about the pace of power restoration and the Jamaica Public Service’s (JPS) plans to issue estimated bills. Holness noted that he had discussed these issues with Minister of Energy, Daryl Vaz, instructing him to ensure fair treatment for Jamaicans by JPS. Vaz is in talks with the Utilities Regulatory Authority (OUR) for improved oversight and quality of service.
Holness indicated that the government is considering a review of the JPS Act to enhance regulation of the electricity grid, aiming to prevent hazards such as trees being planted near power lines.
