In a resounding call for enhanced unity and collaboration, former Jamaican Prime Minister PJ Patterson has underscored the need for swift action to organize a second Africa-Caricom (Caribbean Community) Summit. His appeal comes as part of the celebrations commemorating the third Africa Caricom Day, emphasizing the unique historical, cultural, and socioeconomic ties that bind Africa and the Caribbean.
Strengthening Ties for a United Voice
Patterson, currently serving as the stateman-in-residence at The PJ Patterson Institute for Africa Caribbean Advocacy, highlighted the potential power of united African and Caribbean states within international platforms like the United Nations (UN). He stressed the importance of leveraging this combined strength, noting that the two regions make up over a third of the UN’s membership, a significant fraction that can be instrumental in addressing common global challenges.
“At the present time, there is the need for global restructuring against the background of wars and ethnic conflicts, global warming, food security, energy and financial crises. The UN Secretary General has warned that gains made in development and reaching the Sustainable Development Goals are in danger of being eroded,” Patterson remarked. He added, “It is therefore essential that Africa and the Caribbean speak with one united voice and make good on the promise of full collaboration and a single position to address the common issues facing Africa and the Caribbean.”
Urgency for a Second Summit
Highlighting critical global contexts, Patterson called for immediate steps to organize the second Africa-Caricom Summit, harking back to the first summit hosted virtually by the Republic of Kenya on September 7, 2021. Emphasizing that key decisions made during the first summit should not lose momentum, he urged both African Union (AU) and Caricom leaders to appoint dedicated heads for the urgent planning and execution of the upcoming summit.
“Despite the hectic schedule of intense international engagement, the Institute is compelled to implore our Heads of government and state to avoid a collapse or disappearance from their focus the consequential decisions taken at the first Summit,” Patterson articulated.
Critical Areas of Joint Interest
Patterson outlined several critical domains where Africa and the Caribbean can collaborate effectively, including climate change and resilience, health and food security, trade and investment. Additionally, he pointed towards the importance of fostering greater people-to-people exchanges in sports, music, culture, technology, and innovation.
“It is critical that Africa and the Caribbean designate individuals responsible for the urgent implementation of a second Africa Caricom Summit,” Patterson reiterated. This second summit, he emphasized, is essential in paving the way forward with collaborative strategies for shared prosperity and development.
Ongoing Appeal for Action
This isn’t the first instance of Patterson advocating for the organization of the second Summit. A year ago, he vocalized concerns about the lack of a designated host, time, and venue, warning that further delays pose significant risks.
“Further delay in setting these constitutes a clear and frightening danger,” Patterson had cautioned previously.
As Africa Caricom Day reminds both regions of their historical and cultural links, the call for a structured and timely second summit grows louder. The need for a united stance to tackle pressing global and regional issues has never been more urgent, and PJ Patterson’s plea serves as a clarion call for unified action.
