There’s a common misconception that the world runs on technology. But that’s not true. In fact, the world runs on light, delicious food sold at places like Café Dolce at Progressive Plaza on Barbican Road. Busy businesspeople around the world will tell you they can’t get through the day without fueling themselves with a quick, filling meal at Pret a Manger in London, Panera Bread in Los Angeles, or Café Dolce here in Kingston.
We visited Café Dolce on a recent Saturday morning in search of just that kind of nourishment. As we walked through the door, we were greeted by the restaurant’s minimalist design and bold, inviting colors. A large menu board behind the counter listed a variety of delicious dishes.
After a quick group consultation, we chose buttermilk pancakes with ham, a spinach omelette, a smoked marlin bagel with cream cheese, and a cheese sandwich for our fellow toddler. The food arrived promptly and was piping hot. The pancakes were fluffy, golden and lightly dusted with powdered sugar, and the omelette was loaded with cheese, spinach and ham and very satisfying.
The cheese sandwiches were dripping with gooey melted cheese, but the toddlers took one look at the pancakes and immediately demanded (and I mean insistently demanded) that the pancake owner replace them with sandwiches. Luckily, the pancake owner didn’t mind and we carried on eating with gusto.
Our two cups of mint tea weren’t as hot as we’d hoped, but the kids didn’t complain as they downed two ice-cold bottles of country-style orange juice.
The staff was prompt and courteous from start to finish – to say they were overly enthusiastic would be an understatement – but overall, Café Dolce was a great success, and given its convenient location, I’ll be back soon for breakfast, and to try the various lunch options, including salads, soups, and sandwiches.
