The Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) has taken swift action to address a controversial decision that led to chaos at Caymanas Park. Three stewards have been removed from panel duties for six months following the demotion of Tekapunt from a race on October 21, 2024. The decision to demote Tekapunt led to the abandonment of the remaining races and a backlash from punters.
JRC Chairman Clovis Metcalfe has vowed to restore integrity to the racing industry by ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability. The decision to suspend the stewards involved in the controversial demotion is part of a broader effort to improve the standards of stewardship in Jamaican racing.
In addition to the suspensions, all stewards will undergo a mandatory refresher course and re-examination of their accreditation through the Racing Officials Accreditation Programme (ROAP). Chief Steward Adam Coppola from Maryland racetrack will facilitate the training to ensure that stewards are fully qualified and capable of making impartial decisions.
Metcalfe emphasized the importance of training and expertise for stewards to maintain public confidence in the integrity of racing. The actions taken by the JRC demonstrate a commitment to upholding the highest standards in the industry and ensuring a fair and safe environment for horses, horsemen, and attendees at Caymanas Park.
