PORTLAND, Jamaica — A group of 35 Haitians arrived on Jamaican shores early Sunday morning, landing in Kensington, near Mont Chioneal in East Portland. The group, which includes 29 men, five women, and one child, is currently in police custody.
This incident follows two separate events in Portland from May, where more than 16 Haitians were transported in a vehicle that experienced mechanical issues in the Anchovy Gardens neighborhood of Port Antonio. The vehicle was en route to Montego Bay on St. James Island when the problem occurred.
Local residents attempted to assist the driver, but he was reportedly hesitant to accept help, prompting them to call the police. Both the driver and the Haitians were subsequently taken to the Port Antonio Police Station.
