Castries, St. Lucia – Police reported at least one fatality and multiple injuries during separate shooting incidents amidst St. Lucia’s Carnival celebrations.
In the first incident, 31-year-old Kelder Amedi was shot dead in Valle Denis, a suburb of the capital, Castries. Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the murder.
In a separate incident in Gros Islet early Monday morning, two teenagers were among the injured. A 19-year-old and a 31-year-old man were taken to OKEU Hospital following the shooting.
St. Lucia’s annual Carnival celebrations are in their final two days, featuring a traditional band street parade on Monday and Tuesday.
Spectators at Sunday’s Calypso Monarch contest expressed dissatisfaction with the competition’s judging. The contest featured several past winners, with Dezral, son of retired calypso king Mighty Pep, winning with 785 points for his songs “De Big Guns,” a tribute to St. Lucian sprinter Julian Alfred, and “Looking for Fish,” a tribute to cultural icon George “Fish” Alphonse.
TC Brown secured second place with 736 points for his songs “Our Leaders” and “Iyanola.” Menel placed third with 734 points, and Herb Black came in fourth with 733 points.
