ST. JAMES, JAMAICA — Prosecutors have successfully established a prima facie case against Chevaughn Moore, a St. James vendor, in connection with the murder of Marlon Williams. The ruling was delivered by Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton during a committal hearing on Thursday in the St. James Parish Court.
A prima facie case, which means that the evidence presented is sufficient to proceed to trial, was established based on pre-trial evidence reviewed by the judge. Moore, who is represented by attorney Suwayne Phillips, will face charges for the murder of Williams, who was fatally stabbed on January 6, 2024.
Judge Fairclough-Hylton announced that Moore’s case will be committed to the St. James Circuit Court, with the next court session scheduled for September 19. Following the committal, Moore was granted bail set at $600,000, with up to three sureties. He is also required to report to the police and surrender his travel documents. Additionally, a stop order will be enforced at all ports to prevent Moore from leaving the country.
The allegations state that around 2:30 a.m. on January 6, Moore was operating his stall when he was approached by Williams. An argument ensued, during which Moore allegedly used a knife to stab Williams in the chest and neck. Williams was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Moore was arrested on January 8 following an operation and subsequent questioning. The case will now proceed to the Circuit Court for trial.
