Kingston, Jamaica — Cabinet Minister Olivia “Babsy” Grange has been released from the hospital after spending nearly a month undergoing treatment at the Tony Thwaites Wing of the University Hospital of the West Indies. The culture, entertainment, and sport minister, 78, had a significant portion of her hospitalization period in the Intensive Care Unit.
Government spokesman Senator Abka Fitz-Henley confirmed Grange’s release to the Jamaica Observer on Saturday night, stating, “Yes, Minister Grange was released from hospital today. She is doing well, in good spirits.” He emphasized that the minister would likely take a few days for complete recuperation but is expected to return to her office imminently to continue her work.
“The minister has asked me to convey to people in Jamaica and across the world who have been sending in love, support, and good wishes that she is deeply appreciative of the sentiments,” Fitz-Henley shared. He noted that Grange continued to work on her ministerial responsibilities even while hospitalized.
Grange, who represents the St Catherine Central constituency in Parliament, missed the Independence Grand Gala due to her hospitalization. The event, which took place on August 6, is a significant celebration organized by her ministry to mark the nation’s independence.
The veteran minister’s absence from such a pivotal event highlights the seriousness of her health situation. Despite this, her resilience and commitment to duty have been evident through the continued efforts she made while recovering.
As Olivia Grange returns to her official duties, the nation’s gratitude and well-wishes accompany her. Her expected return marks not only a personal triumph but also a recommencement of her dedicated service to Jamaica in the fields of culture, entertainment, and sports.
