In the wake of one of the most tragic events in history, reggae artists Luciano and Mikey General found themselves witnessing the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on the United States. After wrapping up a tour in the US on September 9, 2001, the two Jamaican singers headed back home, narrowly missing the chaos that ensued the following day.
As the world watched in shock as terrorists struck the World Trade Center in New York, The Pentagon in Virginia, and a location in Pennsylvania, Luciano and Mikey General were safe in Jamaica. Almost 3,000 people lost their lives in the twin towers of the World Trade Center, in what would go down in history as a tragic day.
Reflecting on their decision to return home rather than stay on in the US for a few more days, Mikey General recalled how they would have been stranded amidst the confusion that followed the attacks. With travel disruptions affecting everyone, the music industry was no exception. Major acts like U2, Aerosmith, Madonna, and Janet Jackson all canceled or postponed their tours in the aftermath of 9/11.
When Jamaican artists eventually resumed touring in 2002, they mainly focused on Europe, as the US dealt with the aftermath of the attacks. Rastafarian performers reportedly faced harassment from immigration officers at airports, with some being asked to remove their turbans for inspection. Despite the added security measures, Mikey General and Luciano remained committed to their music and message.
Describing the events of 9/11 as “terrible and heart-rending”, Mikey General emphasized the importance of continuing to spread their message of love and unity through music. Despite the challenges and changes in the industry following the attacks, the duo remained steadfast in their mission.
As the US authorities worked to detain those connected to the 9/11 attacks, including mastermind Khalid Shaikh Muhammed, the world began to heal and rebuild in the wake of such devastating events. Luciano and Mikey General continued to bring their music to audiences around the world, spreading a message of peace and unity in the face of tragedy.
