Kingston, Jamaica – In a surprising move, Olympique Marseille winger Mason Greenwood has begun the process of switching his national team allegiance from England to Jamaica. Multiple sources confirmed that the 22-year-old former Manchester United starlet, who has represented England once at the senior national level, is taking formal steps to join Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz.
Under FIFA rules, players under the age of 21 who have not played more than three matches for their first national team are eligible to change their national allegiance. Greenwood, who played for England in 2020, qualifies under this regulation.
Reports indicate that the Football Association (FA) has handed over the necessary registration paperwork to the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) upon request. This submission will allow the JFF to formally request FIFA to approve Greenwood’s switch.
“The paperwork has been handed over by the FA to the JFF, as per a request, so that a formal request for the switch can be put to FIFA,” stated one report.
Born in Bradford, Greenwood’s eligibility to play for Jamaica comes through his paternal grandparents. His recent career saw him playing a season for Spanish La Liga club Getafe on loan from Manchester United before moving to Olympique Marseille.
The Jamaica Football Federation had their eye on Greenwood for several years. However, concrete steps towards recruiting him were taken following the appointment of Englishman Steve McLaren as the head coach of the Reggae Boyz. Greenwood’s participation could significantly bolster Jamaica’s attacking options.
The swift winger has already been spotted training in a Reggae Boyz jersey, hinting at his enthusiasm for the switch. His addition to the team would bring a blend of youth, speed, and experience, invaluable assets for Jamaica as they aim to achieve greater success on the international stage.
