LOS ANGELES, United States (AFP) — An attempt to rescue a stranded kitten on the CA-91 freeway near Los Angeles led to a three-vehicle crash, but fortunately, no one was injured, including the kitten that triggered the incident.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Javier Navarro, the incident began when a couple noticed a stray kitten on the bustling freeway while driving east on Wednesday. Compassionate about the animal’s plight, the driver, a woman, exited the freeway at the next available opportunity, circled back, and began slowing down in the carpool lane to search for the tiny creature.
The driver brought the car to a crawl at 35 miles per hour in the innermost lane, a move that inadvertently created a perilous situation. Upon spotting the kitten, the male passenger swiftly exited the vehicle to retrieve it, while the driver halted traffic, leading to a buildup of cars behind them.
“A car following them tried to avoid a collision by swerving to the left, but it clipped the left rear of another vehicle,” Navarro explained. This secondary car then veered dangerously towards the man holding the kitten. In a panicked response, the driver of the second car swerved right to avoid hitting him, sending their car careening across all lanes and colliding into a semi-truck.
Amidst the chaos, the man holding the kitten had to jump over the center divider to dodge the incoming vehicle, accidentally dropping the feline in the process. Miraculously, the kitten was unscathed and managed to make its way to safety on its own.
Although three vehicles were damaged in this complex chain of events, the human occupants, including the couple and other drivers involved, did not suffer any injuries. Officer Navarro confirmed, “The kitten didn’t get hit, didn’t get hurt. He made it across on his own.”
Hence, while the rescue attempt may have led to some significant vehicular damage and a heart-stopping moment on the busy freeway, it concluded with the kitten safely on the other side and all involved parties unharmed.
