LIMA, Peru— Jamaican athlete Kelly Ann Carr has successfully advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s 400m hurdles in the World Athletics Under 20 Championships held in Lima, Peru. During the Wednesday morning session, Carr showcased her skills and determination, securing her place in the next round.
Carr started strong, leading the race up to the eighth hurdle. However, she was overtaken in the final stretch and finished with a commendable time of 1:00.61, just behind Australia’s Alesha Bennetts, who clinched the win with a time of 59.04 seconds. Haiti’s Gloria Guerrier also performed admirably, finishing third with a time of 1:00.65, ensuring her advancement to the semi-finals alongside Carr.
It was a challenging day for Deschanique Douglas, another Jamaican hopeful, who unfortunately struck the third hurdle and could not regain her momentum. Douglas finished at the back of the race with a time of 1:05.43. Despite this setback, Douglas has a promising future ahead, holding a personal best of 59.72 seconds. She is set to continue her athletic career with a scholarship at Lincoln University in Missouri after the championships.
Reflecting on her performance, Douglas shared with Observer Online that she had faced difficulties in the weeks leading up to the event. “I had been unable to hurdle for the past two weeks, but I gave it my best shot,” she said, expressing her determination to overcome the obstacles she faced.
