Jamaica Public Service Alerts Customers to Phishing Scams
October 19, 2024
The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has issued a warning to its customers regarding phishing attempts that have recently circulated, posing a threat to personal information security. The company revealed that these fraudulent emails disguise themselves as official correspondence from JPS, aiming to trick recipients into downloading harmful attachments or disclosing sensitive information.
In a statement released on Saturday, JPS highlighted the tactics employed by these scams, which often involve copying the appearance of legitimate company emails. The public is urged to exercise caution and implement protective measures when handling such communications.
To help customers safeguard their personal information, JPS has shared several important guidelines:
-
Verify the Sender: It is critical to check the sender’s email address. Emails that use suspicious addresses such as ‘jpsc.com’ should raise red flags, as genuine correspondence from JPS will originate from the ‘jpsco.com’ domain.
-
Generic Greetings: Be wary of emails that use impersonal salutations, which often address recipients by their email address rather than their name. JPS assures that official communications always address customers by name.
-
Do Not Click on Links or Open Attachments: Suspicious emails should be handled with care, and recipients are advised against clicking on any links or opening attachments they may contain.
- Do Not Provide Personal Information: Refrain from replying to phishing emails or providing any personal data. If you encounter such an email, immediately report it to JPS customer service by calling 1-888-225-5577 or emailing calljps@jpsco.com.
The company emphasizes that customer safety and security are paramount, and urges vigilance in identifying and reporting suspicious activities.
