Jamaica Scorpions announce John Campbell as captain for the Regional Super50 Cup
The Jamaica Scorpions have made a bold move by naming John Campbell as captain for the upcoming Regional Super50 Cup in Trinidad and Tobago. This decision comes after Campbell’s return from a two-year ban imposed by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) in 2022.
Head Coach Robert Haynes expressed his confidence in Campbell’s ability to lead the team, citing his experience and readiness for competitive cricket. Campbell, who has previously captained the Scorpions and has represented the West Indies in Test matches, has been in impressive form since his return to the game. Haynes mentioned that Campbell got a hundred in a trial game and scored 70-plus runs in a recent practice match.
With key players like Rovman Powell, Brandon King, and Fabian Allen on West Indies white-ball duty, Campbell was a natural choice to lead the team due to his experience and leadership qualities. Kirk McKenzie has been appointed as Campbell’s deputy, with promising young talent Tamarie Redwood also included in the squad.
Redwood, a leg-spinner who has represented the West Indies Under-19s, has been earmarked as a player with a bright future. Haynes praised Redwood’s performance in club cricket and during trial matches, highlighting his ability to take wickets.
The Scorpions’ squad also includes out-of-favour West Indies Test batsman Jermaine Blackwood, who Haynes believes can make a significant impact in guiding the younger players. The team is set to depart for Trinidad and Tobago on October 27, with their first match scheduled against Barbados Pride on October 30.
As the reigning champions, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force pose a tough challenge for the Scorpions, who last won the regional 50-over title in 2022. Haynes mentioned that senior players could be brought into the squad later in the tournament if needed. For now, the focus is on Campbell, Blackwood, and the rest of the squad to make a strong start to their Super50 campaign.
The inclusion of young talent like Redwood and the guidance of experienced players like Campbell and Blackwood provide a good balance to the Scorpions squad. With high expectations for the team’s performance, all eyes will be on Campbell as he leads his side in the Regional Super50 Cup.
