The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) marks its 81st anniversary on Monday and reaffirms to Jamaicans its commitment to transforming the country, JLP Secretary-General Horace Chan said in a statement.
Chan said the party also remains committed to empowering Jamaicans, ensuring Jamaica’s economic independence and realizing the vision of shared prosperity for all.
The JLP was founded on July 8, 1943 by Sir Alexander Bustamante, who became the first Prime Minister of independent Jamaica.
“The Jamaica Labour Party remains committed to its mission to be an organisation that defends workers’ rights and seriously pursues policies that improve the lives of the poor and downtrodden. We also remain committed to upholding the principles of a market-driven economy and an environment in which all Jamaicans have the opportunity to earn an income and ensure prosperity for themselves and their families,” said Chan, who also serves as deputy prime minister.
Chan said the JLP was proud of its track record of doing the right thing for the Jamaican people and leading the country in a positive direction whenever it had the honour of managing the island’s affairs.
“Our activities to mark our 81st anniversary this year are modest as we recognise that we must continue to do our utmost and refocus our efforts to help Jamaicans recover from what has been a major setback for many following the passage of Hurricane Beryl,” Chan said.
The JLP Secretary-General added that the party will continue to conceive and implement policies that benefit the people of Jamaica.
Chan added that the JLP continues to introspect and has not lost sight of the importance of implementing measures that will put it in a better position to continue to steer Jamaica in the right direction, the statement said.
