Powell showcased remarkable skill and determination, coming off the final turn in the lead before being overtaken. Great Britain’s Charles Dobson secured the first place with a time of 44.96 seconds, followed closely by Belgium’s Alexander Doom with 45.01 seconds.
Other Jamaican Competitors
Despite their valiant efforts, World Championships finalist Sean Bailey and national champion Deandre Watkins will have to compete in the repechage round to secure a semi-final spot. Bailey performed commendably, clocking an impressive 44.68 seconds, the ninth-best time of the round. However, he finished fifth in his heat, which was notably competitive, with American Michael Norman winning in 44.10 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards came in second at 44.31 seconds, and Botswana’s Collen Busang Kebinatshipi secured the third automatic spot with a personal best of 44.45 seconds.
Watkins, who made headlines with a massive personal best of 44.48 seconds to win at the JAAA national championships, couldn’t keep up the momentum and was never in contention on Sunday. He finished with a time of 45.97 seconds.
