KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Defence Force’s (JDF) Maritime, Air and Cyber Command (MACC) announced that nine fishermen were rescued in the Morant Islands following a search and rescue operation on Friday.
Initial reports said 11 fishermen were missing, but later reports confirmed the number was nine, the JDF said at the weekend.
The fishermen reportedly set out on Saturday, June 29th from the Cow Bay area of St Andrew in three canoes for Morant Cays and were due to return on Tuesday, July 2nd. After they failed to return and efforts to contact them proved futile, the Self-Defense Forces were contacted and a search and rescue operation was launched.
The JDF said the fishermen were found stranded in the Morant Islands after poor sea conditions caused by the passage of Hurricane Beryl made navigation difficult. They were escorted by JDF coastguard personnel, where they were reunited with their families.
The JDF advised mariners to report delayed or distressed vessels to MACC at (876) 926-8121 (ext. 4004-6) or (876) 836-1216.
The JDF reiterated its commitment to “utilize its assets and operational capabilities to protect lives and ensure the safety and security of all its citizens.”
