Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell made headlines at the Memorial Borisa Hanžekovica in Zagreb, Croatia, a World Athletics Continental Tour-Gold, by breaking his own national record in the Men’s Shot Put event. Campbell threw an impressive 22.31m, surpassing his previous outdoor best of 22.22m set in Madrid, Spain, in July 2023. This achievement also moved him up to fifth best in the world for the year so far.
Campbell, who won a historic bronze medal in the throws for Jamaica at the Paris Olympics, expressed his joy at setting a new personal best and national record. He stated that his goal coming into the event was to make amends for his performance the previous year, where he finished 10th with 19.81m.
In addition to Campbell’s success, three other Jamaican athletes were victorious at the meet. Ackera Nugent won the 100m hurdles, Stacey-Ann Williams triumphed in the women’s 400m, and Shawn-D Thompson emerged victorious in the men’s long jump.
Nugent, the world leader in the 100m hurdles, continues to impress with her performance. Williams set a personal best and meet record in the women’s 400m, while Thompson secured the top spot in the men’s long jump event.
The Jamaican athletes showcased their talent and determination at the Memorial Borisa Hanžekovica, with Campbell’s record-breaking throw standing out as a highlight of the event. With the Diamond League finals in Brussels approaching, these athletes are gearing up to finish the season on a high note. Jamaican fans can look forward to more exciting performances from their talented athletes as they compete on the international stage.
