The excitement is building as Jamaica’s talented young athletes gear up to compete at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru. The five-day event kicks off with the chance for Jamaican athletes to win two medals on the opening day.
The Jamaican team, which arrived in Lima in three groups, is set to showcase their skills in various events, including the men’s shot put, mixed 4x400m relays, men’s and women’s 100m, men’s triple jump, women’s discus throw, women’s long jump, and women’s 800m.
One of the athletes to watch is Shaiquan Dunn, ranked 11th in the men’s shot put. Dunn has had a successful season so far, winning at the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) athletics championships and Carifta Games. He is expected to put up a strong performance in Peru.
In addition to Dunn, the mixed 4x400m relay team is also poised for success, with the preliminaries scheduled for the morning and the final set for the evening on the opening day.
Among the sprinters, Gary Card and DeAndre Daley will represent Jamaica in the men’s 100m. Both athletes are expected to be in the medal race, with Card bringing an impressive season best of 10.07 seconds to the competition.
On the women’s side, Alana Reid, the number one ranked sprinter in the 100m, is a strong contender for a medal. Her teammate, Thieanna Lee Terrelonge, is also expected to advance to the final with her impressive personal best of 11.13 seconds.
The Jamaican team will also be represented in the men’s triple jump, women’s long jump, women’s discus throw, and women’s 800m events, with talented athletes ready to showcase their skills on the world stage.
The coaching staff for the Jamaican team has seen some changes, with Herbert Morrison Technical Head Coach Claude Grant stepping in for Corey Bennett and the addition of massage therapists Evan Allen and Jerome Kirby.
