Three Jamaican sprinters shone in the men’s and women’s 100m events on the first day of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru. Deandre Daley, Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, and Gary Card all competed with skill and determination, with two of them advancing to the semi-finals.
Deandre Daley and Gary Card both won their first-round heats in the men’s 100m event, with times of 11.37 seconds and 11.40 seconds respectively. Alana Reid also secured a spot in the semi-finals by winning her heat in the women’s race with a time of 11.46 seconds.
Unfortunately, Theianna-Lee Terrelonge was unable to progress to the next round after finishing fourth in her race with a time of 12.03 seconds. Despite her disappointment, Terrelonge remained composed and reserved in her response to the media.
Alana Reid, the number one ranked women’s Under-20 sprinter in the world, expressed confidence in her abilities heading into the semi-finals. She remained focused on her goals and was determined to perform at her best in the upcoming races.
Gary Card spoke about feeling relaxed and well-prepared for the competition, thanks to his training in Europe following the national trials. Deandre Daley also commented on his race, acknowledging the need to work on his start but praising his performance in the transition phase.
On a slightly disappointing note, Rohanna Sudlow fell short of making the final in the women’s long jump event, finishing 14th overall with a best jump of 5.94m. Despite missing out by just two spots and two centimeters, Sudlow showed determination and perseverance in her performance.
As the World Athletics Under-20 Championships continue in Lima, Jamaica’s sprinters are poised to showcase their skills and determination on the world stage.
