LIMA, Peru – Under a cold and gray sky, Jamaica’s dedicated young athletes showcased their talent and determination during the final day of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the Estadio Atletico de la Videna.
Shaiquan Dunn and Daniel Wright, two of Jamaica’s promising track and field stars, both secured seventh place finishes in their respective events. Dunn, a discus thrower, and Wright, a 400m hurdler, demonstrated their competitive spirit amidst stiff international competition.
Daniel Wright’s Performance in the 400m Hurdles:
Wright finished the 400m hurdles in 51.61 seconds. Initially placing eighth, he moved up to seventh following the disqualification of Chile’s Ramon Fuenzalida. The event saw American athlete Vance Nilsson take the gold with a world under-20 leading time of 49.26 seconds. Michal Rada of Czechia claimed silver, setting a national under-20 record with a time of 49.30 seconds, while Finland’s Anti Sainio took bronze in 49.61 seconds.
Shaiquan Dunn’s Journey in the Discus Throw:
A highlight of the championships for Jamaica was Shaiquan Dunn, who entered the competition as a top contender with a world-leading throw of 65.48m. However, he managed 59.79m in the final, securing him a respectable seventh place. Earlier in the week, Dunn also made it to the finals in shot put, where he finished ninth on Tuesday.
Both athletes’ placements are commendable achievements at such a prestigious event, reflecting the strength and potential of Jamaica’s young talent on the global athletics stage.
