KINGSTON, Jamaica – In an electrifying match at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Trinidad, Jamaica showcased their determination and resilience by defeating Puerto Rico 3-1 to advance to the final of the Tier 1 2024 CFU Boys’ Under-14 Challenge series.
Despite going a goal down at half-time, the young Jamaican team stormed back in the second half thanks to a swift lineup change and the commendable performance of Kelvin ‘DJ’ Brown, a second-half substitute. This semi-final victory now records the Jamaicans’ fifth consecutive win of the series.
The Match’s Progression
Puerto Rico struck first, when Wilfred Reyes Rivera converted a penalty in the 35th minute, following a foul by Jamaican goalkeeper Marcodean Spence on Fabian Salls Diaz at the edge of the box. This goal marked the first time Jamaica had conceded in the series, placing pressure on the young squad as they went into half-time trailing 1-0.
However, the second half marked a dramatic turnaround for the Jamaican side.
Second Half Resurgence
Substitute Kelvin ‘DJ’ Brown equalized for Jamaica in the 52nd minute. His speculative shot from outside the 18-yard box took a slight deflection off a Puerto Rican defender, ultimately slipping under the diving goalkeeper Martin Perez Colon.
Jamaica continued to press their advantage, taking the lead in the 60th minute. Brown’s initial shot was partially saved by Perez Colon but only as far as Kyle Hussey, who capitalized on the opportunity by firing the ball into the unguarded net.
As the clock wound down, ensuring Jamaica’s victory, Brown etched his name onto the scoreline once more. In time added, Perez Colon’s fumble on a header from Carlando Morris allowed Brown to head the ball across the line, sealing Jamaica’s win with a final score of 3-1.
What’s Next?
With this triumphant win, Jamaica has booked their place in the final, where they are set to face either French Guiana or Trinidad. The grand finale will unfold on Sunday at the same venue, promising an exciting clash as the young Jamaican squad aims to cap their impressive streak with a championship victory.
