In the wake of a tragic mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, Canada-based dancehall artiste Captain C has expressed alarm at the increasing trend of mass shootings in his homeland, Jamaica. The artist, whose real name is Noel Hoyes, highlighted the recent incidents of violence, including a shooting at a birthday party in Clarendon where eight people were killed, as well as another shooting at a wake in St Catherine.
Captain C emphasized the need to address the escalating violence in Jamaica, noting that such incidents are becoming too frequent and worrying for the country. He voiced his concerns about the safety of traditional social gatherings such as funerals, nine nights, and bingo parties, questioning whether they are no longer safe spaces.
Despite these concerns, official reports indicate that murders in Jamaica have decreased by 15.8% compared to the previous year. However, Captain C remains steadfast in his stance against violence and is actively promoting his latest anti-violence song, “Real Deal.”
The artist, who has personally experienced the impact of gun violence in his community and in Canada, is using his platform to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of violence. His song “Real Deal,” released earlier this year, has garnered positive feedback and has been well received by listeners and radio stations in Jamaica.
Captain C, who hails from Jones Town in Jamaica, has a musical lineage that inspires his work. With plans to release an EP next year and embark on a tour across Canada and Europe, the artist remains dedicated to spreading a message of peace and unity through his music.
As Jamaica continues to grapple with the challenges of violence, artists like Captain C are using their talent and influence to advocate for a safer and more harmonious society. Through his music and activism, Captain C is making a powerful statement against the culture of violence that threatens the nation’s social fabric.
