Renowned reggae singer Jah Cure, legally known as Siccature Alcock, will persist in serving his six-year sentence for attempted manslaughter in the Netherlands. This decision comes in the wake of a recent ruling by a Dutch judge last week.
Jah Cure, globally celebrated for his soulful hits like “Love Is,” was present at a pro forma hearing in a Dutch court recently. The hearing was a procedural step as prosecutors are ardently working to overturn the singer’s prior acquittal on charges of attempted murder.
Tuscha Essed, the press officer for the Public Prosecution Service on appeal, informed Observer Online, “The process is still in the hands of the investigative judge for the hearing of witnesses. The next pro forma date is November 12.”
The Jamaican artist appeared in court on August 21 for the pro forma hearing. According to Dutch law, suspects awaiting trial must attend such hearings periodically. These hearings enable a judge to determine whether to continue the suspect’s incarceration every 90 days until the actual trial is scheduled.
In March 2022, Jah Cure was convicted of attempted manslaughter and was consequently sentenced to six years behind bars. The conviction stemmed from an incident in October 2021 when Jah Cure stabbed a Dutch concert promoter over unpaid performance fees. The trial judges adjudged that Jah Cure’s actions didn’t amount to a premeditated act of attempted murder, leading to his acquittal on the graver charge. However, Dutch prosecutors appealed against the acquittal shortly after the conviction.
As of January 2024, Jah Cure remains remanded pending a forthcoming new trial.
Despite his legal troubles, Jah Cure remains a significant figure in the reggae music scene, known for his acclaimed tracks such as “Longing For,” “Love Is,” “That Girl,” and “True Reflection (Behind These Prison Walls).”
