Flow Jamaica says 77 per cent of its mobile customers have service and 24 per cent of affected fixed service locations have been restored as the company’s technical teams continue restoration efforts following Hurricane Beryl’s passage through the island.
“We continue to work with the nation’s major commercial power companies to restore service to ensure customers affected by the hurricane get back online as quickly as possible,” Steven Price, the carrier’s vice president and general manager, said in a statement Saturday.
Many of the areas affected by the outages are areas that lost utility power during the storm, the release said.
The company said parishes where service was primarily affected included Portland, Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine, St. Elizabeth, Manchester and St. James, noting that of the 1,714 fixed service locations affected by commercial power across the island, 413 communities, or 24%, have so far been restored, including locations in Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine and St. James.
The company said areas where service has been restored so far include parts of the Corporate Area, parts of May Pen in Clarendon, parts of Portmore and Spanish Town in St Catherine, and parts of Montego Bay, Sandy Bay, Bogue Hill, Unity Hall, Coral Gardens and Ironshore in St James.
According to the announcement, the company was able to restore its mobile network population coverage from 66% to 77% after the hurricane.
The company said its technical teams will complete their inspections and assessments of the damage in affected areas over the next few days as they work to restore service to more areas, and that they will also continue to replenish generators at key facilities in areas affected by the commercial outages.
The company said in the meantime it has been facilitating device charging and other services through Store on Wheels in the communities of Majesty Gardens, Denham Town, Seaview Gardens, St Andrew, Mitchell Town and Portland Cottage in Clarendon and Flanker in St James.
On Sunday, Store on Wheels will visit Mitchell Town and Portland Cottage in Clarendon.
