ST JAMES, Jamaica – In a significant drug bust at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, Jamaican police have charged two Hungarian nationals for attempting to smuggle cocaine. The suspects, Istavan Ozi and Andras Raffael, both professional car salesmen from Hungary, were intercepted while preparing to board a flight to Manchester, England, last Wednesday.
According to law enforcement officials, routine security checks revealed suspicious behavior as the men were about to board their flight. Detailed scrutiny led to the discovery of their suitcases, which contained cleverly hidden packages of cocaine within false compartments.
The incident occurred around 11:45 AM and prompted immediate action by the authorities. In addition to the suitcase concealment, further investigations disclosed that the men had ingested pellets of cocaine. Medical intervention at a nearby hospital resulted in the expulsion of a total of 53 pellets from their bodies. The total weight of the seized narcotics was approximately 2.73 kilograms.
Charges against Ozi and Raffael include possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, and taking steps to export cocaine. The duo is currently being held and is scheduled to appear before the St James Parish Court on Friday, August 23, to face the charges.
This case highlights the continuous efforts of Jamaican law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking through major transportation hubs. It also underlines the sophisticated methods employed by traffickers to evade detection, necessitating rigorous inspection protocols at airports.
