Reggae master Ansel Collins wins four Grammy awards in August
After receiving his first Grammy in nearly four decades, reggae legend Ansel Collins is looking forward to receiving four more Grammys this year, including one for his work on Sly & Robbie’s 1999 album Friends.
This January, the legendary keyboardist finally received a Grammy Award, nearly 40 years after his incredible contribution to Jimmy Cliff’s Cliff Hanger, one of the reggae genre’s greatest masterpieces, won him the second Reggae Grammy in 1986.
Collins, famously known as one of the first male duos (Dave and Ansel Collins) to top the UK music charts, will be presented with his Grammy certificate at a special event hosted by Back to da Future Music Limited.
His career spans over 50 years and he has played with notable artists and bands such as The Upsetters and The Aggrovators, and he remains one of the most influential keyboardists in reggae history.
“I am incredibly honored to finally receive these awards which have been long awaited,” a grateful Collins said. “It’s been a long journey, but these Grammy certificates are a testament to the enduring power of reggae music and the incredible artists I’ve had the opportunity to work with over the years.”
The ceremony is part of an effort to distribute approximately 100 outstanding Grammy certificates to individuals in the reggae and dancehall music industry who have contributed to Grammy-winning and nominated works. Approximately 50 Grammy certificates will be presented in Jamaica, with others to be presented to winners in Florida and the United Kingdom.
Collins rose to international fame with the hits “Double Barrel” and “Monkey Spanner”, and also served as keyboard player on the original “Stalag 17” rhythm.
