Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards judge and avid tea lover, Stacey Belnavis, had the opportunity to revisit High Tea at the Terra Nova All Suite Hotel on Thursday, May 23. Accompanying her were Kelly Wong Henry and Lily Henry.
The concept of high tea dates back to the mid-19th century, when it began in England as a hearty meal enjoyed by working-class people after a long day at work. Unlike the elegant afternoon tea enjoyed by the upper classes, high tea was served at high dining tables and featured hearty dishes to satiate the appetite. Over time, the tradition has evolved and its essence – combining social camaraderie with culinary pleasures – is beautifully preserved at Terra Nova.
Held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 3pm to 5.30pm, the tea parties have become a beloved must-do for locals and visitors alike, providing a fun escape from the everyday. In fact, it was the perfect backdrop for a “mommy and me” date with my friend Kelly and her daughter Lily. Terra Nova offers more than an afternoon of indulgence; it’s a journey through time, combining the flavorful grandeur of traditional British living with the vibrancy of Kingston.
We arrived at 3pm and Lily was super excited for her first high tea experience. We got there early and were surprised to see others had arrived before us – always a good sign! Once seated, the adults were promptly treated to welcome sparkling cocktails. The hotel had taken great care to ensure that the tables were decorated with exquisite, luxurious details, including all-white crochet and linen tablecloths and napkins, and polished silver cutlery.
The buffet included Caribbean Dreams and Bromley teas, coffee, callaloo quiche, deviled eggs, pickled cucumber sandwiches, assorted finger sandwiches, ribbon chicken, petit fours, scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, tea cake of the day, cookies, cheesecake, a selection of cupcakes, a fruit and cheese platter and the must-have Hampden rum cake.
The Terra Nova High Tea menu did not disappoint and was exactly the same as my last visit. The staff were all polite and attentive, just as I’d expect from Terra Nova. Plus, all the treats were delicious and I’d want to return. When asked what her favorite treat was, Lily replied, “Devilled eggs are the best. I love them.”
The high tea at Terra Nova was absolutely delicious and a lovely tea break – definitely recommended if you want a break from the bustle of the capital.
Notices:
The tea selection could be further enhanced with the addition of more exotic tea blends – the Tea Forte brand was on display but not available during our meal.
