Govana greets Popcaan as he arrives at the release event for his album “Legacy.”
Industry figures, producers, entertainers and media personalities streamed at the Lanny Williams Entertainment Centre on Hope Road in Kingston as dancehall artiste Govana launched his second album, Legacy, on Thursday night.
The 12-track “Legacy,” which topped several regional Apple Music charts on Friday, features collaborations with Skeng, Mavado, Jada Kingdom, Aidonia and Popcaan.
“It’s always fun to collaborate with fellow musicians. Jada and Skeng have been friends since I’ve worked together in the past. Popcaan and I have been friends since I first discovered music. Mavado has been someone who has inspired me ever since I was growing up so it was a pleasure to make music with him,” Govana said in an interview with Observer Online during the launch event.
“It was easy and interesting to blend it all together. They’re all good musicians, so it was challenging but easy,” he continued.
Legacy is the sequel to 2020’s Humans and Monsters Are Not the Same.
Govana says he’s grown musically over the past four years in between projects.
“I’ve grown as a better person. I’ve grown a lot. I learn something every day and I intend to keep learning. Every time I release music I always try to evolve from what came before. There’s no point in continuing to do the same thing over and over,” Govana said.
Music has changed a lot in recent years, and Govana says he supports a new generation of dancehall artists.
“I think music changes with the times, so the youth also changes with each generation. Hip-hop and pop music will continue to be at the forefront. The youth are playing music and making a fuss. There is still good music being played, but the focus now is on the youth expressing themselves,” Govana argued.
He added: “I’m not out to beat the lads, I’m just trying to guide them as best I can.”
He explained the concept behind the album title, “Legacy.”
“Legacy is what every human being leaves behind when they are born onto this planet. What you are remembered for, the impact you had on lives, negative or positive. That’s what legacy is to me,” he explained.
At the presentation, Govana’s mother, Sonia, spoke passionately about her son’s achievements and humble origins.
Dancehall artistes Aidonia and Popcaan performed collaborative tracks from their respective Legacy albums.
Music industry figures in attendance included Chimney Records’ David Hale, dancehall artistes Bugle and Raja Wilde, music video director and producer Raption, producer Jamie Roberts and selector Richie Feelings.
Legacy is executive produced by Chimney Records and distributed by Ineffable Records.
Tracks include “Earth a Hell” featuring Mavado, “Dat Mi She” featuring Skeng, “Walmartt” featuring Aidonia, “Pull Over” featuring Jada Kingdom, “Saved by a Psalm” featuring Popcaan and the title track.
Producers include Din Din, Emudio, Crash Dummy, Brandon Shakespeare and Attomatic Records.
