Dancehall artiste Govana has officially released his sophomore project, ‘Legacy’.
The artist said the 12-song project showcases his versatility.
“This album is more blended compared to the first one. I think it tells a story. The production on this album is more advanced, the collaboration is more… the first album had more of a reggae feel and it was a conscious collaboration,” Govana told the Jamaica Observer at the official album launch, held at the Courtyard at the Lanny Williams Entertainment Centre on Thursday.
It features collaborations with Popcaan, Jada Kingdom, Aidonia, Skeng and Mavado and is executive produced by Chimney Records.
The launch was hosted by Tricia “ZJ Sparks” Spence and was attended by Aidonia, Popcaan and Govana’s mother Sonia Ecclestone, who declared how proud she was of her only son.
Meanwhile, Govana said the project, which took about a year to complete, features some intentionally vulgar songs.
“You can’t do the same thing over and over again. There’s only one thing I want to do forever – to be successful. I want to evolve and do something different. So none of my albums will sound the same. They’ll all be unique in their own way,” he said.
Govana’s real name is Romeo Nelson. The popular DJ grew up in Spanish Town, St. Catherine and attended St George’s College in Kingston.
Their debut album, Humans And Monsters Are Not The Same (HAMANTS), was released in 2020.
Meanwhile, Chimney Records producer David Hale said compiling what he believes will be a successful album has been a smooth experience.
“Because us and Govi are very close and everyone else we collaborated with is very close as well, it just felt like we were doing what we always do but with more focus and concentration. So essentially, we had a specific goal in mind. It wasn’t forced in any way. We just worked at it every day,” Hale told the Observer at the launch.
