KINGSTON, Jamaica — Communications provider Digicel has announced that it has activated its hurricane contingency plan in earnest to ensure it is fully prepared to best respond to events over the coming days amid the potential impacts of Hurricane Beryl, which is hurtling towards Jamaica and expected to make landfall on Wednesday.
Digicel said in a statement on Tuesday that all of its cell towers across the island are in good condition and ready to deploy. The company also said it has made significant additional credits available to help customers stay connected.
“Digicel’s crisis management team will continue to monitor and track the hurricane as it intensifies,” the statement said.
Digicel Jamaica chief executive officer Steven Murad urged everyone to do all they can to prepare for Beryl, saying the company’s main concern was “the safety of Jamaicans and keeping them connected to their friends and family, no matter what.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to urge people to take the necessary steps to prepare for Beryl, such as stockpiling basic supplies, securing their homes, keeping their phones charged and being able to contact their loved ones,” he said, stressing that “we are doing all we can to ensure we are prepared to weather the storm and have mobilized our technical teams and field engineers across the island.”
