The increasing use of digital devices among children is a major concern, with screens having a major impact on young eyes, a concern highlighted by Dr Alon Wall, CEO and Chief Optometrist at Eye Q Optical.
“The widespread use of digital devices has created new challenges for children’s eye health,” he said. “Prolonged use of screens, including smartphones and tablets, can lead to a range of problems, from digital eye strain to myopia.”
In fact, there are many drawbacks to spending long periods of time looking at screens. Studies have revealed a significant increase in cases of digital eye strain in children, which manifests as dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, fatigue, and more. Additionally, studies have shown that increased screen time may lead to the development of myopia, especially in younger age groups.
Given these challenges, it’s more important than ever to develop smart screen time habits.
“Taking regular breaks, maintaining good ergonomics, and blinking regularly are essential habits to reduce digital eye strain,” says Dr Wall, who advocates for a balanced approach.
Professional eyewear features, such as blue light blocking glasses, are equally important in reducing the negative effects of prolonged screen time.
Eye Q Optical says it has led the way in creative ways to protect the eye health of young people in Jamaica.
“Children need a holistic approach to eye care to grow up safely in a digital world,” said Dr. Wall. “By nurturing the gift of vision, we pave the way for a brighter tomorrow — one in which all children can imagine a world of limitless possibilities.”
