NWA Launches Repair Program on North Coast Highway in Response to Hurricane Damage
St James, Jamaica – October 25, 2024
The National Works Agency (NWA) has announced an initiative to repair sections of the North Coast Highway in Hanover, tackling the damage caused by the passage of Hurricane Beryl. Under the Relief Emergency Assistance and Community Help (REACH) programme, the NWA is set to enhance the highway infrastructure over the next two weeks.
Janel Ricketts, Community Relations Officer for NWA’s Western Region, stated that the repair project, valued at nearly $20 million, will commence this weekend. This proactive approach is part of a larger plan under the REACH programme—estimated at approximately $3 billion—that aims to improve road conditions islandwide.
The specific focus of the repairs will be on the highway stretch from Great River to Negril. Key areas identified for immediate attention include Hopewell, Sandy Bay, Mosquito Cove, Lucea, Davis Cove, and Orange Bay. These locations have been prioritized to ensure essential connectivity and to bolster community access in the wake of infrastructure challenges exacerbated by the hurricane.
The REACH programme embodies the government’s commitment to rebuilding and strengthening Jamaica’s critical road networks, providing much-needed relief to communities severely impacted by Hurricane Beryl. The initiative not only addresses immediate concerns but also fortifies the island’s resilience against future adverse weather events.
For further updates on the road repairs, the NWA encourages residents and commuters to stay informed through regular announcements and advisories.
