Digicel Jamaica chief executive officer Steven Murad, in a statement on Friday, said the company was committed to ensuring all customers were reconnected.
“Our promise is that we won’t stop until all Digicel customers are connected again,” he said, praising the huge achievement while thanking the company’s work teams on the ground. “The rapid restoration of communications for consumers and businesses is at the heart of our disaster response plan. Our teams are experienced and constantly looking for ways to perfect the restoration process, and we’re always ready to respond at a moment’s notice.”
Over the past two days, coverage has improved significantly in the hard-hit areas of St Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hanover and Clarendon, and mobile users across the country are also receiving a Digi-Cares bonus of 1.5 gigabytes of data and 30 minutes of local calling to welcome them back onto the network.
“The service may be unavailable today, but your bonuses will remain in your virtual wallet until the network is restored and available again,” Murad explained.
Digicel has also assured customers that it will refund any data that was lost due to the storm by the end of July.
Digicel also said that in addition to working to restore network connectivity, it is also setting up mobile charging stations in areas without power to help customers charge their devices free of charge.
Highlighting the impact of these efforts, Fedora Bailey, Head of Direct and Retail Sales at Digicel, said, “Data services are more important than ever before, so it’s our mission to empower our community members to charge their devices, top up their credit and purchase data plans so they can stay connected to the people and things they love most.”
“What warms our hearts is the feedback we receive from the community. It may seem like a small gesture but it makes a big impact,” she added.
In addition to the mobile charging stations, Digicel Foundation has also been actively involved in distributing care packages filled with essential food items including non-perishable food items, hygiene products and other essentials to address the immediate needs of residents and aid in the recovery process.
