ST MARY, Jamaica — Devon Williams, the man accused of killing 3-year-old Asher Campbell and wounding five others in Port Maria, St. Mary, appeared in court on Friday and was remanded in custody.
Williams’ lawyer, Dane Marsh, requested the remand, stating that he was awaiting crucial information about his client from overseas. The judge granted this request and scheduled Williams’ next hearing for Thursday, July 25, in St. Mary Parish Court.
Asher Campbell was buried on Sunday, July 14, following the tragic incident on the afternoon of May 29. According to Port Maria police, Asher was walking with his family in the Pagey area between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. when Williams allegedly attacked him with an iron pipe and a knife.
When family members intervened, Asher’s mother and four others were slashed and beaten. The injured included:
- Asher’s 9-year-old sister, who sustained a wound to her left hand.
- His mother, Philippa Walker, 45, who was wounded in her right hand.
- Philip Brown, 58, who suffered stab wounds to his face and lacerations to both hands.
- Michael Brown, 61, who was shot in the head and fingers.
- David “Choppa John” Waugh, 56, a newsagent and laborer.
The community remains in shock over the unprovoked attack, and residents are calling for justice for Asher and the other victims.
