Denbigh High School Advances to Last 16 of daCosta Cup Football Competition
Denbigh High School’s football team has successfully secured a spot in the last 16 of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after a convincing 4-0 victory over Holmwood Technical in the Group 5 round-of-32 game. The match, which took place at Foga Road High in Clarendon, saw Lashawn Barnaby shine as he scored all four goals for Denbigh High.
Despite missing the first three matches of the season, Barnaby has managed to score an impressive 14 goals, leading his team to victory. Denbigh High, who finished second in the group on four points, edged out Belair High on goal difference to advance to the third round of the competition for the first time in over a decade.
Coach Garfield Carney expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to progress further in the tournament, stating, “We think our chances are very good and we hope to get back to the quarter-finals this year.” Denbigh High is set to face tough competition in Zone 4, which includes Central High, McGrath High, and Manchester High.
Carney believes that a win in the upcoming matches will secure their spot in the quarter-finals, especially against Central High, whom they have previously faced in the preliminary round. The team’s recent successes, including a win over Clarendon College in a first-round play-off game, have boosted their confidence and determination to advance in the competition.
Elsewhere, Happy Grove High also secured a spot in the last 16 after a dominant 5-1 victory over Belair High. With a perfect round of 32 and a total of 44 goals scored in 13 games this season, Happy Grove High is poised to make a strong impact in the upcoming rounds.
As the competition heats up, Denbigh High and Happy Grove High are determined to continue their winning streaks and make their mark in the daCosta Cup football competition.
