CARICOM member states’ flags

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders on Sunday postponed their annual summit, which was due to begin this week in Grenada, to a “date to be determined” as several Caribbean nations prepare for the passage of extremely dangerous Hurricane Beryl.
Grenada was scheduled to host the summit from July 3rd to 5th, but the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) has been reliably informed that following consultations with Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell and the CARICOM Secretariat, “it has been agreed that the meeting in Grenada later this week will be postponed to a yet to be determined date.”
“This takes into account that Hurricane Beryl strengthened to a Category 3 (now Category 4) overnight and will pass south of Barbados and then St. Vincent and the Grenadines overnight. From there its predicted path will take it towards Haiti, Jamaica and the vicinity of Belize by the weekend,” a source told CMC.
Air travel has already been affected by schedule changes and further impacts are expected, they said.
“Most member states, including host country Grenada, will be dealing with emergency preparedness and its aftermath. The main focus across the community is to prepare for the impact and ensure the safety and security of people,” the source said, adding that regional countries would be informed of the decision “in the coming days.”
